Fathima Paruk

Fathima Paruk is a full Professor of Critical Care and the Academic & Clinical Head of the Department at Steve Biko Academic Hospital of Critical Care and the University of Pretoria. She is the President of the Critical Care Society of Southern Africa(CCSSA)and serves as a council member of the World Federation of Intensive and Critical Care Medicie. Additionally, she holds various positions including Co-Chair of the Africa Telehealth Collaboration, Chair of the Critical Care College Committee in the CMSA and membership of the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of Witwatersrand. She has served on several Ministerial appointed committees including the National Health Research Committee and the Committee for the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths in SA; and more recently serves on the medical regulatory organization for SA (HPCSA). Her interests include telehealth, sepsis, drug dosing, biomarkers, critical care training and medical ethics. She has successfully trained many intensivists and supervised numerous postgraduate degrees including PhDs. She has authored several guidelines, book chapters, reviews and research publications and is regularly invited as a speaker at various national and international platforms.
